NFC East: Giants

We are about a month and a half away from the start of the 2017 NFL football season.  This is the time of year when the craving for football intensifies. I don’t know about you all but I’m fending like a junkie! This is the best time of year to get familiar with all the teams in the NFL. I like now because fans haven’t had a chance to get emotionally attached to some 7th round pick that won’t make the team. Inside writers haven’t begun to over exaggerate the performances of the back up players in training camps. Right now you can just google search whatever you want to know about a team and get some nice analysis about certain off-season workouts. You get predictions about a player’s contribution this upcoming season. I love stuff like that. I’m going to take this time to so a little research on the NFC East teams, starting with the New York Giants.
Last off-season the Giants spent $200 million bringing in some high priced free agents. Their 2015 defense was god-awful and they decided to throw money at the problem, it worked! The 2016 New York Giants finished 11-5 and second in the NFC East behind the Dallas Cowboys, which they beat twice last season. The Giants owe a ton of their success to the revamped defense that went from being ranked in the 20s in 2015 to top ten in 2016. The additions of Damon Harrison, Jenoris Jenkins, and Oliver Vernon put this team over the edge. It has made them a legit contender for a championship.
The biggest addition to the Giants this off-season is Brandon Marshall. He is what this offense has been missing. Marshall is a big-bodied chain mover. He will go across the middle, get dirty on short yardage, and allows them to play jump ball on the outside. Beckum is their number one receiver without a doubt and he is the home run threat, their big playmaker, but he doesn’t get dirty like Marshall will. Last season the Giants expected Cruz to be the dirty receiver. All he did was drop passes across the middle and whiff on blocks down the field. Marshall will catch those passes across the middle, with defender on him. He will go up and get those jump balls. Marshall will be a big asset to the Giants this season.
I also like the drafting of Evan Engram. He is another big bodied guy that Eli will be able to throw balls up at. Engram played tight end in college and will probably play tight end for the Giants. It will be interesting to see him blocking on run plays because he is a little light at 240lbs. I’m not saying small but Marshall is 235 lbs and plays receiver. Either way, I’m sure the Giants will figure out a way to use Engram. He will be a mis-match nightmare for every defense. They will already have to worry about Beckum and Marshall on the outside. Sheppard in the slot should be even better in year two. Now throw in this hybrid wide receiver/tight end in the mix and the Giants could be just as dangerous on offense as they are on defense.
Speaking of defense, the Giants have one hell of a defensive unit. Damon “Snacks” Harrison is a load to deal with up front. He allows them to do so much because of the lanes he creates for the linebackers and safety Landon Collins. Oliver Vernon works great in their scheme because he plays the run well, and can rush the passer very well. Jason Pierre Paul (JPP) is a beast off the edge in both run support and getting after the passer. Landon Collins as developed into an impact safety. He has shown the range over the top to play sideline to sideline. Collins will also come up and deliver a boom in run support. Throw in Jenoris Jenkins and Dominque Rogers Cromartie and you have two excellent corners to complete this unit.
With the additions on offense, the Giants are now a complete team. If the offensive line can protect Eli and Eli can protect the football, this could be a special year for the Giants. The one true weakness for this team it the offensive line. A few years back they switch to the short passing offense because they weren’t able to keep the pressure off Manning. The issues with the offensive line is also the main factor to the lack-luster run game. That and they don’t seem to be able to find any decent running backs. Paul Perkins may be able to settle in as their main guy this season.

The Giants look good this year. The whole NFC East division looks tough this season. I expect another 10 win season for the Giants. They have the Cowboys to contend with for the divisions top spot but they are still a very dangerous team heading into 2017.

NFC West 2017 preview: 49ers

Parity in any sports league is a good thing, it means that there is competition, throughout the league and not really one dominate team. The San Francisco 49ers don’t have to concern themselves the leagues Parity because they are one of the least competitive teams in the league. Trust me this will be a very short blog!             The 49ers are in rebuild mode. No this isn’t a retool situation, this is a blow it up, burn it down, destroy the entire thing situation. The 49ers won two games last season and was a non-factor in most of those games. They brought a fist year general manager in John Lynch. Lynch then brought in first year head coach Kyle Shannahan. Together they have a pile of horse sh** on their hands. Where do you start with this team?             The 49ers finished 32 nd in yards allowed and points allowed per game l...

NFC South Preview 2017: Falcons

It was 21-3 at halftime and the winning team was completely dominating the losing team. The losing team came out of halftime and wasn’t able to move the ball against the winning teams defense and had to punt. The winning got the ball marched down the field, scored another touchdown and took a 28-3 lead with 8:31 left in the third quarter. The winning team only needed to hold onto the lead for 23:30 and they would have won their first super bowl title. The Atlanta Falcons was the team up 28-3 and the other team was the New England Patriots. New England was able to come back and win this super bowl game 34-28. It was one of the greatest comebacks in super bowl history for the New England Patriots. How will that game effect the Falcons going into the 2017 season?             A team can responds in two ways from such a devastating lost. They could use that as ammunition and motivation to get back to the super bowl and avenge that l...

NFC North Preview 2017: Chicago Bears

You know that saying, “you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig”, that is how I feel about the Chicago Bears. I can sit at this computer, go over a bunch of stats, and try to boost the fans hope in this team. That just isn’t realistic. The Bears stunk to the high heavens last year. They didn’t make any significant improvements and if their rookie quarter doesn’t develop this season they’re 5 years away from contending for a division title. This is a review blog, so I will discuss the team’s off-season moves and some of their star players. Just don’t read this expecting to hear from the Bears hype-man, because I ain’t he and he aint I!             Getting right to it, the Bears are a better team with the departures of Alshon Jeffery and Jay Cutler. I know it’s hard to consider them being better losing their best player in Jeffery, but they are. Alson Jeffery has the size, skill set...
